The Duet Gala Concert, presented by Cape Town Opera and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, takes place in the Artscape Opera House on 11 June 2022 at 18h00.
Directed by Christine Crouse, a glittering line-up of South African singers will join us for the event: Nobulumko Mngxekeza, Megan Kahts, Nonhlanhla Yende, Lukhanyo Moyake, William Berger, rising star Khayakazi Madlala, Cape Town Opera Soloists, Cape Town Opera Young Artists, Cape Town Opera Chorus, as well as the Tygerberg Children’s Choir. The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by German-Polish conductor Adam Szmidt.
The Duet Endowment Trust was established by Mrs Wendy Ackerman for the preservation of Cape Town Opera and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. The Duet Gala Concert is made possible with generous support from the Judith Neilson Head Trust, Rupert Music Foundation, Western Cape Government Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and the German Consulate General Cape Town.

Special gala performance at Kirstenbosch Gardens

One of South Africa’s foremost classical singers, Pumeza Matshikiza , returns to South Africa for a special gala performance at the Kirstenbosch Gardens in support of the Duet Endowment Trust. Ms Matshikiza won the hearts of audience members in the world’s great opera houses in appearances with Rolando Villazón and Josh Groban, for the opening of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and at the wedding of Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco among many other events. In this concert, Ms Matshikiza sings classical and African arias and duets, joined by tenor Sipho Fubesi and accompanied by the Cape Town Opera Chorus and Young Artists, with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Jeremy Silver. This concert highlights the Duet Endowment Trust, a joint endowment for Cape Town Opera and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.

This Requiem Mass, written to commemorate the death of Alessandro Manzoni, the Italian poet and novelist, was given its first performance in Milan in 1874. It is Verdi’s only major sacred work but is essentially dramatic and theatrical in nature and sung by four soloists and choir.

Something on Perry:
Conductor Perry So, born in Hong Kong and based in Boston, received the First and Special Prizes at the Fifth International Prokofiev Conducting Competition in St Petersburg. His CD with Alexander Gilman and the CPO won the prestigious Diapason d’Or award. He is a frequent guest conductor of the CPO and orchestras internationally from the Cleveland and Minnesota to the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

On Oct. 24, at the Duet Gala, members of the audience can anticipate a glittering night of opera with twelve talented opera singers:
Levy Sekgapane (tenor); Noluvuyiso Mpofu (soprano); Mandla Mndebele (baritone); Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi (soprano); Siphamandla Yakupa (soprano); Frances du Plessis (soprano); Violina Anguelov (mezzo); Nonhlanhla Yende (mezzo); Nkululeko Masuku (tenor); Johannes Slabbert (tenor); Martin Mkhize (baritone) and Thomas Mohlamme (bass).
Adding to the audience’s enjoyment of the sparkling programme of arias, duets and ensembles from operas by Mozart, Rossini, Massenet and Richard Strauss occasion, is the knowledge that this is a fundraising event for the aptly named joint endowment trust – Duet, established by Wendy Ackerman in August 2014 for the advancement and preservation of The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Town Opera.

2016 DUET GALA CONCERT

The Duet Gala Concert at the Artscape Opera House in March 2016, the hottest ticket in Cape Town, saw standing ovations from a full house celebrating South Africa’s extraordinary musical talent. Cape Town Opera and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Kamal Khan presented a programme opera overtures and exquisite bel canto duets sung by South African internationally acclaimed artists, sensational soprano Pretty Yende and tenor Sunnyboy Dladla. This was great music that touched the heart – this is what Duet is all about.
